This original oil painting features my version of a ribbon-tailed astrapia, one of the beautiful birds-of-paradise. Its elegant tail streams upward, transforming into vapor, suggesting that eventually its entire form will too. This beautiful bird, like its many of its cousins, is facing extinction due to habitat loss and hunting.
The title "Sublimate," like the word, has a double meaning. On one hand, physically it means to turn from solid to gas, skipping the liquid phase. This speed reflects the severity of the threat to the species. At the same time though, sublimate also means to modify culturally or socially into an acceptable behavior. There's hope and positive change that can be made if we choose to do so.
18"x10", oil on canvas. This was part of San Francisco's WonderlandSF's group show, Urban Jungle, in 2017.
