Shibori is an original oil painting. I was inspired by the ornate symmetrical patterns delicately carved into the sandy sea floor by male Japanese pufferfish. These elaborate and intentional geometrical structures are created to attract females. Although the fish are only about 5" long, the circular formations they make measure about 7' in diameter and take 7-9 days to construct. The title comes from a Japanese tie-dye technique which produces patterns that are strikingly similar to center of the pufferfish's sand-art. I just love that the survival of the species hangs on the artistic skills of the fish!
